'Behavioural Activation for Depression.

Clinical skills workshop for

mental health nurses'

Conducted by Dr David Ekers

Clinical depression is one of the most common and debilitating mental health disorders, currently the second largest cause of global disability. Behavioural Activation (BA) is an effective and relatively simple psychological treatment for depression. In this workshop participants will gain an understanding of the theoretical basis for BA and how this relates to clinical delivery. They will be presented with the most up to date evidence for the intervention and how this supports this as a role for MH nurses. Participants will have an opportunity to practise delivery of key components of the intervention and consider how these may be used in their own clinical setting.

Dr David Ekers is a Nurse Consultant at Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust/Senior Visiting Research Fellow and the University of York. He has worked clinically in the UK and Australia.  He was the lead investigator on the first pilot RCT of BA delivered by mental health nurses. He was co-investigator, site lead and clinical supervisor on two NIHR funded multicentre RCTs establishing BA’s clinical and cost effectiveness and is Chief Investigator on the Community Pharmacy Mood Intervention Study (CHEMIST). David is internationally recognised as a leading expert in BA and in particular the dissemination of the intervention beyond traditional therapist delivery.
