Level 2 Workshop Program

The Level 2 one day workshop will build on the underpinning knowledge and understanding gained from the online eLearning modules. To be eligible to attend, you must complete all online modules.

Workshop objectives

The Mental Health Essentials Workshop aims to provide participants with the opportunity to build on and consolidate mental health knowledge and skills developed through completion of the online Mental Health Essentials eLearning modules. A key aim of this interactive workshop is on the practical application of this knowledge to general practice nursing. The overall aim of the workshop is to increase participant knowledge, confidence and skills in working with people with mental illness in general practice settings.

Registration will commence 15 minutes prior to Session 1.

Program Topics

  1. Session 1: Mental health and general practice nursing
    Builds on participant knowledge and understanding of mental health and illness. The session commences with an introductory review and facilitated discussion of the key messages about mental health in general practice presented in the Mental Health Essentials eLearning modules. Content areas covered include type, prevalence and impact of common and less common mental illnesses, physical health and co-morbidity, contemporary models for mental health care, and therapeutic approaches and interventions. The second part of the session involves a collaborative problem-solving approach to identify common challenges associated with providing quality mental health care in everyday general practice nursing and explore strategies and approaches that may address some of these challenges.​

  2. Session 2: Mental health assessment
    Builds on participant knowledge and experience of undertaking a holistic biopsychosocial mental health assessment. The first part of session 2 focuses on communication and therapeutic approaches used when undertaking mental health assessment, areas of assessment, and interpreting assessment findings. The second part of the session examines risk assessment. The topics covered include, at risk populations, risk assessment method, suicide risk assessment, and risk formulation.

  3. Session 3: Care planning, referral, and documentation
    Builds on participant knowledge of care planning with a focus on risk assessment and management. The first part of the session reviews the principles of urgency assessment (triage) and recovery-focused care planning and referral for people with mental illness. The second part of the session focuses on the reporting and information requirements when documenting a mental health assessment.

  4. Session 4: Maintaining safety
    Extends on participant knowledge and experience of identifying clinical deterioration in mental state, and the principles of timely intervention to prevent further deterioration and relapse. A key focus of the session is on patient safety, de-escalation and violence prevention. The session uses a problem-solving approach to explore issues pertinent to the assessment and management of the patient experiencing an escalation in behavioural disturbance related to deterioration of mental state.

Associate Professor Natisha Sands

​

Associate Professor Natisha Sands has lead a sustained program of research and education in emergency mental health care that has influenced policy and practice at the local, national and international level. A particular focus of this research has been improving the evidence base for mental health triage and crisis care. The primary aim of this work has been to contribute to safe, high quality emergency mental health care.
